Dealing with emotions


Growing up as a child, I used to throw a lot of tantrums. My family saw this as a plead for attention, defiance and unruliness, as most families would also call it. Thinking back now, all I was experiencing in those moments was a rush of emotions that I had no business dealing with. They would build up and cause a buzz that needed to be expelled. Being the child that I was, I was overwhelmed and frustrated and had to deal with an explanation demanding adult that also seemed to be frustrated and angry.


We deal with so many emotions, each triggered by certain situations. Some emotions are better than others but others can be dangerous if not controlled. Sometimes you can feel a series of emotions at the same time and this can be very confusing and frustrating. At other times you may not know why you are feeling a certain emotion(s).


It is then important to reflect and ask your self certain questions that will lead you back to the cause of feeling that emotion. Allow yourself to feel the emotions just as they are, accept them.


Learning to control your emotions is the best thing you could ever do for yourself. You can avoid so many unwanted outcomes, such as abrupt decisions and remarks.


If something is triggering you or making you emotional, stop for a second. Exhale and inhale for a while. Distract yourself by doing something else. Do not react or say anything for a while. Think about something else. Come back to the situation when you’ve gathered yourself and are calm.


Not everything has to go your way. Accept whatever you are dealing with. Ask yourself how YOU can make the situation better.


Everything revolves around you in situations that you are present in, you are part of them, therefore, you also have an influence on them.


So how can you make things better? Forget about the other person for a moment, think about yourself.


You cannot control the other person. You can only control yourself. Only you can control what you feel and think.
